Keeping A Happy Hamster

Hamsters are easy to keep and make good first-time pets for small children. With the correct care, loads of attention and all the necessities, your hamster will prosper and be healthy. Although he is a small and fragile animal, and appreciates your company and interaction, be careful with your hamster and always handle him very gently.

When picking up your hamster, take it slow and give his body extra support by holding him with both hands. You don’t want to frighten him, as he might bite you. A good idea is to gently tap on the side of the cage before you pick him up so that he’ll be aware of your presence.

Never handle your hamster when you have a cold or the flu, as hamsters are susceptible to these diseases and may become sick too.

HOME SWEET HOME

Make your hamster’s cage special, as this is where he’ll spend most of his time when you’re not around. There are a variety of cages to choose from. Choose one made of wire or plastic that will provide plenty of ventilation, with a removable litter pan. The cage should be large enough for your hamster to run around without bumping into the sides. Also make sure that the cage door closes securely, so that your hamster won’t be able to escape.
