A late start to the rainfall season in parts of the summer grain production region should result in farmers decreasing maize production in favour of sunflower
Global palm oil production and ending stock levels have recovered since the drought of 2015/2016. However, rising production and slowing demand from top importers are expected to place a damper on palm oil prices, which is likely to support vegetable oil prices. The seasonal decline in vegetable oil production will also support prices until March.
In 2017, global sunflower seed oil prices were subdued compared with other vegetable oil prices, but are expected to improve this year (see Table 1).
