White and yellow maize prices are expected to decline by between R150/t and R200/t over the next few months due to high global and local supply levels and the strengthening rand, according to agricultural economist Prof Johan Willemse.
Speaking at an agricultural market trends workshop in Bloemfontein recently, Willemse said that this was a “conservative estimate”.
Responding to comments from attendees that it was currently difficult to secure supplies of maize, Willemse said this was due to many producers holding back stocks until there was more certainty with regard to the current harvest.
