29 years ago Computers had already become an indispensable part of farming by the early 1990s, as this article indicates.
It appears that farming is being divided into two distinct categories. First there are those that farm traditionally like their forefathers, aiming for maximum crop and livestock production and hoping the weather will play along.
The second type of farmer is more difficult to place, if only because he never stops changing. Due to the breathtaking pace of technological developments and improvements, this farmer is always adapting to keep up with the latest technology.
Perhaps it’s fair to say that the high-tech farmer is not a farmer in the true sense of the word. Instead, he’s become a manager involved in the ‘business of farming’. The high-tech farmer understands finance and business principles and he’s not interested in obtaining maximum yields from crops or livestock production. Instead, he’s interested in maximum profit.
