Pony Driver's Gold After Crowd-Fund Campaign
A SQUAD of British drivers who crowd-funded their way to the pony driving World Championships returned with individual gold, creating hope for the future of the British sport.
Tara Wilkinson, 20, won the pony pairs, after the squad crowdfunded £5,000 towards support personnel in Minden, Germany (15-20 August).
“When we finished the last worlds we were thinking how we could raise more money, as driving is expensive and, as a non Olympic discipline, receives no central funding,” said Ben Freer, who managed the campaign. “Travelling up to five horses plus carriages gets expensive. It’s one of the main reasons people give up.”
The result was a boost for a sport that has struggled to enter championship teams this season.
