New measures will help monitor the welfare of foals bred for a racing career.
THE British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has narrowed the window in which breeders must register foals in a bid to improve traceability of horses bred for racing.
From 1 January, thoroughbred breeders must notify Weatherbys General Stud Book within 30 days of the birth of a foal bred for racing. Previously, breeders had 12 months to register the foal.
The changes mean the BHA will be able to monitor the welfare and whereabouts of foals before they go into training.
The BHA’s chief regulatory officer Jamie Stier said this will improve “transparency and traceability” in the early-life care thoroughbreds receive.
