Everyone's Sweetheart

When it comes to the definition of sweetness, the Cocker Spaniel is no stranger to that term.

Everyone's Sweetheart

Wholesome, happy and energetic dogs that are able to adapt to any situation they’re placed in, the Cocker Spaniel remains one of the most beloved family pets around the world due to its kind and loving disposition.

The Cocker Spaniel was first mentioned in 14th century writings referenced as “Spanyells”, where its origins were assumed to be Spain. While the word spaniel means “Spanish Dog”, the actual origin of this breed still remains unknown.

In England, the Spaniels were bred as hunting dogs for Eurasian woodcocks despite their small stature. By the 1800s, these dogs were divided into two separate groups: toys (companions) and hunting dogs (land workers and water retrievers). Till today, the Cocker Spaniel remains known as the “smallest member of the sporting-dog family”.

Throughout history there have been many variations of this breed, however, the English Cocker Spaniel and English Springer Spaniel are what are thought to be the foundation of the modern day breeds of Cocker Spaniels. After the late 1870s the English Cocker Spaniels were brought into the United States, where it soon gained its popularity with both breeders and pet owners.
