High up in the hills, in a little village outside Dehradun, Japanese weaver Chiaki Maki and her small crew of craftsmen have been weaving beautiful, earthy textiles for many years now. At Gangamaki—her atelier, which was designed by Bijoy Jain in 2017—quiet magic unfurls every day: local silk cocoons turn into wispy, lustrous yarns, fabrics dipped in pigments extracted from local plants are colored in vivid blues and soft yellows, while sewing machines and handlooms hum and clack in the distance.
Named after the river that glides through the valley and the founder herself, Gangamaki is a space for experimentation: this is where her textiles come to life–which then travel some 5,500 km away, to Maki’s eponymous studio and retail headquarters in a village outside Tokyo–and also where she nurtures her gentle approach to the craft of textile-making, which made her a very popular jury choice, and eventually, one of the winners of the JSW x AD Prize for Contemporary Craftsmanship 2021.
