A long, long time ago (but not in a galaxy far, far away… although it is Leicestershire, so…) Melv had a serious accident on a building site, had to change career, and became a long-distance heavy-goods vehicle driver. He felt that, because of the fact that he was away so much, his biker life was over, but then one day he met a lovely lady called Linda, and they fell in love and got married. She put a stop to him traipsing the length and breadth of the country in a truck, and encouraged him to get back on to two wheels. They went off to a well-known motorcycle shop in Hinckley, and brought a Kawasaki VN900 Custom. This was in 2007.
Whilst on the trucks, Melv’d met a guy named Jake who had a Yamaha DragStar at the time. They started going on rides together, with their respective ladies on the back, and it was Jake who suggested Melv made some changes to the Kawasaki. He bought, and fitted, a set of Vance Hines Rumbler exhausts and, later, higher ’bars and a Saddlemen seat. Everything else he kept pretty much bog-standard… apart from the fantastic artwork, which happens later in the story.
Then, as mentioned in the Triumph article, tragedy struck. Linda had a stroke, and was airlifted to Derby Royal hospital. Now, because Melv was a grafter, and he’d saved a bit, the Government decided he had too much money, and refused to help with Linda’s care, despite the fact that carers charged £13 an hour while he was only earning £10 an hour, so he had to give up work and become her full-time carer.
