If there is one thing I have learned in my travels around our nation over the 30 years I’ve been with HEAVY DUTY, it is that country folk know how to have a good time. Country bikers in particular!
You’ve probably never heard of Kabra, a small town with around 500 inhabitants, and consequently you will probably be unfamiliar with the Kabra Country Hotel. Unless you’ve ridden the Capricorn Highway, heading west from Rockhampton toward Emerald.
When Geoff Trewin, dealer principal of Rocky Harley- Davidson, invited me to fly up for this event I jumped at the chance as I had greatly enjoyed previous trips to bike shows that he sponsored at his dealership. However, this event was primarily organised by the Sons Of The Southern Cross SMC (SOTSC), a social motorcycle club with an emphasis on raising money for charity.Forget the cars – you can read about them in other mags – we will focus on the bikes and the event itself.
‘Old school’ is a bit of an overworked phrase these days but it well describes this show, where an enjoyably mellow atmosphere reigned for the day and no aggro was seen.
I had the honour of being the judge for the bike side of the show, which was a pretty reasonable thing, as I wouldn’t know a Camaro from a Cortina. Well that’s an exaggeration of course, but cages have two more wheels than I prefer with my internal combustion vehicles. Mind you, there were some horn cars there; cars with mega performance engines if the long black strips along the highway as some of them headed home are any guide. Smokin’!
