It’s always nice to do a bit of our own work in and among the day-to-day ferry tasks. This month one of my customers asked if we could fit in a timber delivery followed by an onward delivery of two robotic milking units to their end user, a dairy farm, just outside Skipton on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales.
The agricultural jobs that come up from time to time are always welcome, in the sense of “keeping my hand in” as the slightly worrying saying goes! My early career was focused on dairy farming and I attended both Askham Bryan College at York and latterly, Harper Adams UC in Shropshire, finally having to accept becoming a grown up in the summer of 2000 at the ripe old age of 28.
The customer buys, sells and installs used Lely Astronaut milking machines up and down the country and also stands as a dealer for Moored Concrete over in Ballymena, supplying concrete water troughs, slatted flooring and other products used in stock farming. Last year we delivered two robots over into Ballymoney and reloaded a full shoot back for stock at the premises in Bedale. The pull from Cairnryan up past the DVSA site at Glenluce made the old Cummins squeal a tad at bang on 44 tonnes!
