Thinking outside of the box led to the creation of this sickest of boxes, a jackedup Bay on Syncro steels. Let’s off-road!
The Bus you’relooking at here is the handiwork of theType 2 Detectives. I’ve known the chaps and chapette who work there for donkey's years. In fact, head Detective Paul Medhurst reminds me pretty much every time I see him that he got me the job on this magazine. You see, back in the day, I paid a visit to their Burwell HQ to write a feature on them for Classic Car Weekly. When I applied for this gig, the former editor Ivan rang up and asked Paul what I was like. His answer was “Alright I suppose,” but it was enough to help get me an interview,” so thanks Paul!
Today, they buy, restore and sell a vast amount of air-cooled VWs, but T2D is probably best known for its suspension work. That’s why I was there last year, and whilst having some suspension surgery carried out on my Beetle, this Bus arrived on a transporter.
Fellow Detective, Mark Fulton was kind enough to show me round the new arrival and when I asked what their plans for it were, he said: “Not sure really. It’s such a lovely Bus that it would be a shame to mess with it, but it would be great to do something different with it.”
Some months later I discovered exactly what Mark meant by something different as a number of pictures of its transformation appeared on social media.
Raise the lowered
It turns out that something different for the bods at Type 2 Detectives is to raise a Bus up, rather than slam it for a change. It’s certainly unlike anything else they’d built for a while and has caused a stir wherever it has been since.
