Ever been to Maharashtra? If yes, you must have sampled the delicious Marathi food, walked on the quaint little beaches and have been mesmerised by the simple and laidback Marathi lifestyle, which is decked with jewels of love and harmony.
It is indeed an ideal land, sun-soaked, and wrapped in traditions and customs made especially for the kind and pure at heart. It is the land of simplicity, and yet, this simplicity has a grandeur all its own which is reflected in their weddings as well.
Out of all regional weddings, Marathi or Maharashtrian weddings are filled with rituals that are quite simple yet vibrant. Most of their wedding ceremonies are conducted during the day. The process begins by matching the bride and the groom’s horoscopes. If their horoscopes match perfectly, an auspicious date is fixed for the wedding and other ceremonies. The general relaxed ambience hides behind its façade of fun and sparkly rituals, which are not to be mistaken as a drab and formal affair.
Marathi weddings are full of colours and a variety of fun rituals that can send you off into a tizzy of delight. Today, it is an interesting mixture of native traditions set off against contemporary settings. If you want to experience simplicity with a touch of sophistication, the Marathi wedding is your go-to option and you would be lucky to attend one!
Pre-Wedding
Sakhar Puda is one of the first rituals, which marks the beginning of the wedding process. The formality of the whole affair is symbolised by this traditional ceremony. This is held a few days prior to the wedding. The groom’s mother initiates this ceremony by gifting the bride a saree, jewellery and some sugar or sweets as a symbol of accepting her presence in the family.
