‘GSL Is The Biggest Exporter Of Defence Ships From The Subcontinent'
Businessworld|August 18, 2018

Goa Shipyard has over the years designed, built and commissioned a wide range of vessels for defence and commercial applications. BW Businessworld’s Manish Kumar Jha caught up with GSL CMD RAdm.(Retd.) Shekhar Mital to get an insight into the work being done by the shipyard.

‘GSL Is The Biggest Exporter Of Defence Ships From The Subcontinent'

What are the factors that have made GSL a performing asset?

A major differentiator has been the culture of timely deliveries and sanctity of contractual delivery schedules. In the last four and a half years, GSL has delivered 27 ships, out of which 25 have been delivered ahead of schedule and two on schedule. The present management, since 2014, has adopted a new business model, which is focused on adoption of best practices and innovative technologies, and timely delivery of ships at low operational costs.

The shipyard has delivered 32,000 tonnes of ships in the last four years, and 12,000 tonnes in FY17-18 alone, which is the highest in the industry. These include one Offshore Patrol Vessel for the Indian Navy, six Coast Guard Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessels, two AOPVs for Sri Lanka, two fast patrol vessels and 11 fast interceptor boats for Mauritius, four 1,000-tonne fuel barges for the Indian Navy and one damage control simulator each for Myanmar and the Indian Navy.
