The field of extended reality (XR) was, until recently, a dream of science fiction writers. Today, with advances in computing power, the dreams of a virtual world are coming ever closer to fruition.
But how do you gain control over XR? Do you use a joystick, a gamepad, or something else? This week, SME speaks to Kyul Ko, co-founder and COO at Ommo Technologies, a startup pioneering magnet-based tracking in the medical XR field.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START OMMO TECHNOLOGIES?
Our CEO Minjie Zheng and I actually wanted to build a perfect hand tracking technology for XR applications. We are both avid gamers and thought that XR would be the next computing platform to live out our fantasies. Only, we realized that XR was falling far short of its true potential because it lacked an appropriate input system. Companies were using, and still use, joysticks and wands that better fit the standard PC setups. The problem turned out to be that 3D tracking is an extremely difficult task and all the traditional approaches were failing. Something had to be done and we decided to build an entirely new method based on a permanent magnet’s magnetic field.
COULD YOU OUTLINE SOME USE CASES FOR OMMO’S 3D POSITION TRACKING SYSTEM?
