It’s hard to be harried in Himeville

A Village Fair

The main street of the village of Himeville – just past Underberg if coming from the Pietermaritzburg/ Howick side – is pleasingly picturesque. An old stone church, St Michael and All Angels (complete with castle-like battlements around the top of its bell tower), welcomes you into town on the left, with the Tudorstyle Himeville Arms, built at the turn of the last century and sitting a little lower than the current road level.

On the other side of the road is the excellent Himeville Museum, constructed as a prison in 1899 and serving in that capacity until the mid-‘70s, when it assumed its current role. These and other attractions – when in season, the blossoming cherry trees alongside the road are gorgeous – make the village and its surrounds a great option to explore on foot if you’re staying in the area.
