Struggling to keep your eyes open in a different time zone after a long flight? Fret not. These globetrotting celebs dish out some tips.
1. Do your math
DESMOND TAN
Travels: Three to five times a year
“I calculate the time difference between Singapore and the country I’m heading to, and start sleeping according to the time zone of my destination once I get on the plane. When it’s night time in that country, I’ll order wine to make myself sleepy and knock myself out. I also bring my eye mask and listen to music so that I can block out all external [disturbances]. When I finally get to my destination, I don’t get much jet lag. A little planning and mathematics beforehand helps!”
2. Load up on lavender
CHUA EN LAI
Travels: 20 long-haul flights a year
“I always get jet lag whenever I travel, especially to Europe and America. I just try to sleep as much as I can. When I’m flying, I have my ear plugs, eye masks, pajamas and lavender sleep spray. When I get home, I burn lavender oil and use lavender moisturiser. I also use a calming pillow mist. Actually, the worst thing about jet lag is trying to stay awake when tired. I drink coffee and take Berocca, and avoid my bed at all costs. The bed is like the Bermuda Triangle — it’s a big black hole that sucks you in, and once you sit down, you fall asleep and it screws your body clock up!”
3. Have booze and books on standby
