The How I Met Your Mother star on how her new Netflix show, Friends from College, brings back memories of a soul crushing job.
Welcome back to TV Land! After spending nine years on How I Met Your Mother, what brought you back to TV with Friends from College, a sitcom about a group of fortysomething pals from Harvard experiencing midlife crises?
COBIE SMULDERS: I’ve known [Friends from College creator] Nicholas Stoller for a long time. Nick and I met when he was making Jason Segel’s movie, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and I have just watched his career over time and just really enjoyed his work. Also, I wanted to challenge myself by doing more improv on set. The show was shot in New York City and I live in New York City. I was excited about working for Netflix and also, we’re shooting eight episodes, whereas on How I Met Your Mother we shot 22 episodes a year for nine years.
Like How I Met Your Mother, Friends from College is an ensemble show.
I think the tone of [College] is very different from [Mother]. It’s quite adult. It deals with addictions, infidelity, and inappropriate behaviour — all these dark themes that I haven’t really done before.
Yes, it sounds dark, but it’s still a comedy.
