XIE SHAOGUANG recently returned to Mediacorp… to teach an acting workshop. Could this be the harbinger of a showbiz comeback for the enigmatic ex-Ch 8 star? We take a close read of the statement Shaoguang sent out after his teaching stint in search of clues.
He went from being one of Ch 8’s most revered actors to, not quite a reverend, but an ordained monk. And last year, it was revealed that the super-media shy, extremely low profile Xie Shaoguang had returned to secular life and was working as a chef at a vegetarian eatery in Johor Bahru. It had seemed that a showbiz comeback for the former thespian, who bid adieu to acting 12 years ago, was about as possible as Harvey Weinstein winning a Nobel Peace Prize.
But just last week, Shaoguang conducted a two-day acting workshop for Ch 8 artistes, like Elvin Ng, Felicia Chin and Carrie Wong. What does this mean? For someone so determined to stay out of the limelight for over a decade, was this Shaoguang’s way of saying that maybe, just maybe he’s ready for a comeback? We ask Georgina Chang, head of Mediacorp’s The Celebrity Agency, for some insight, and she says: “Nothing official for now. I heard he’s not yet ready to start acting again, so we want to be respectful and give him space and time.”
And of course the enigmatic former actor did not grant any interviews, but he did release a statement that, if you ask us, hinted at a possibility of a Shaonaissance. Let’s break it down line by line:
