The film star was a very affectionate and demonstrative father. "We were a huggy, kissy family," says Gary's daughter, Maria Cooper Janis. An only child, Maria was included by her parents in all their leisure activities. "We played tennis and golf together," she tells Closer. When Gary created an art studio at their home, he made room for Maria, who shared his creative talents. "My father loved to paint," she says, "We would do that together."

"He had this ability to make you believe something magical could happen," recalls Jennifer Landon to Closer, explaining that once on a family ski vacation to Vail, Colo., Michael dusted the freshly fallen snow with strawberry Nesquik powder. "He sent us out there with spoons," she recalls. "It was like the backyard had become one big slushy."
