As a ban on Iceland’s Xmas TV ad sparks a backlash, Closer asks why rainforests are still being destroyed.
A storm over the banning of a supermarket’s Christmas TV advert has led to an overwhelming call for a move away from damaging palm oil. Iceland teamed up with Greenpeace to feature a cartoon story of “Rang-tan”, a baby orangutan who takes up home in a little girl’s bedroom after being forced out of the rainforest by deforestation for palm oil plantations. But TV bosses banned the ad for being political, which led to it going viral online with over 30 million views.
Richard George, Greenpeace UK Forests Campaigner, says, “People have a right to know where the palm oil in products comes from, and they’re not happy to learn it’s causing mass deforestation and killing orangutans.”
