ACCOMPANIED BY George Clooney and his parents Nick and Nina in New York, Amal Clooney was last week honoured as 2018’s Global Citizen of the Year at a United Nations dinner.
The human rights lawyer won the award for her humanitarian work, which includes representing incarcerated journalists in Burma, Egypt and Azerbaijan.
Within hours, there were headlines about everything from her choice of outfit – a £5,100 dress by J Mendel – to the A-list husband on her arm, and her acceptance speech, in which she stated that Donald Trump had given a ‘green light’ to autocratic regimes. She went on to criticise the US President’s attacks on the press, who Trump has labelled the ‘enemy of the people’.
