To say that the homes designed by Adil Ahmad have a touch of opulence would be a gross understatement. Rich, palatial interiors define an Adil Ahmad home, but always with a rather contemporary vibe. A Doon School dropout who hails from one of Lucknow’s old moneyed families, Ahmad grew up in the city that came to be known as the Constantinople of the East.
“Lucknow was a melting ground of cultures, where the occidental and the oriental blended seamlessly,” Ahmad says of his city.
Against the backdrop of these influences, it was only natural that an impressionable youngster would gravitate towards the world of design.
“I got my first paid project at 16,” he tells us from his home in the hills of Uttarakhand. “I call my style ‘contemporary classical’; it takes the best of the past and brings it to the present. My style is influenced by both the Ottoman culture and English country homes. I’m also a voracious reader with a photographic memory. I learn from my travels, the people I meet and the cultures I’m exposed to, my family background being my prime influence.”
Ahmad’s signature style encompasses floral wallpapers that accentuate the character of any room. The tones are warm, in soft pinks, breezy blues and subtle greys, lending the surroundings a cosy ambience. In keeping with this mood, he prefers to adorn a room with the queen-sized beds that are just right for a couple, with sideboards to fill the compact space.
