When the United Kingdom’s second national lockdown lifted (albeit very briefly) in early December, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wasted no time in resuming in-person duties with a tour of England, Scotland, and Wales on the Royal Train.
According to a press release from Kensington Palace, the Duke and Duchess embarked upon the mini-Royal Train Tour “ahead of the Christmas holidays to pay tribute to the incredible work of individuals and organizations that have gone above and beyond in response to the coronavirus pandemic.”
Starting on Sunday, December 6th the young Royals, abiding by the COVID-19 guidance in place, boarded the Royal Train, a nine-carriage used only rarely by the Royal Family. The distinctive burgundy-liveried train is hardly ever used because of the cost of running it. Queen Victoria was the first reigning monarch to use the train in 1842 when she travelled from Slough to London Paddington. The Queen last used the Royal Train to carry out a visit to horse racing stables in Castle Cary in 2019.
