Salome Mitter turns the focus on the dos and don’ts to minimise the risk of unwanted sexual consequences among the LGBTQI community.
India celebrated yet another Independence Day this September. With the Supreme Court striking down the British-era Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, ruling that consensual gay sex in private is not a crime, it was another landmark day of freedom for Indians, to live and love like they wish to.
With this basic human right finally acknowledged, the LGBT narrative now turns to other important issues, such as safer sex. Safer sex is a term that relates to strategies that minimise the risk of unwanted consequences of sex, such as transferring HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Some amount of risk is unavoidable when it comes to most sex acts; however, there are precautions which can be taken to ensure we engage in ‘safer sex’.
DOS & DON’TS FOR SAFER SEX
Just like it is for heterosexuals, safer sex can be practiced via establishing consent, knowing our boundaries, using condoms, communicating needs and desires. Getting tested for HIV and STIs is essential, as is informing one’s partner about the same. Condoms are essential as are other barrier methods such as dental dams. These create a protective barrier for the mouth, genitals and anus, preventing contact with bodily fluids such as semen, pre-cum, vaginal fluids and blood which can transmit disease.
Use lube (water-based always) to reduce injury and chaffing. Lubricant prevents irritation, which lowers the risk of getting an STD. It is also essential for transgenders, who might be undergoing hormone therapy. The body can start to reduce the production of fluids during sex which could lead to irritation and tearing of the condom.
