As Prince Harry works to fulfill his late mother’s legacy, he and Duchess Meghan are taking baby Archie back to where their love affair began
Nearly three years ago, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle took what he’s called a “huge leap” and, after just two dates, spent five days together in Botswana. There, during the summer of 2016, they shared a tent and “camped out with each other under the stars,” Harry revealed in their engagement interview. “I remember when Meghan told me about Botswana,” the Duchess of Sussex’s friend, actress Janina Gavankar, told Good Morning America in May 2018. “They fell in love with nothing around them… All they had was each other, doing good [charity] work in a place where nobody was watching them.”
But now, all eyes will be on Harry, 34, and Meghan, 37, as they return to the continent where it all began — this time, with their infant son. Us Weekly has learned exclusive new details about the Sussexes’ two-week visit to Africa in October, including everything from 2-month-old Archie’s passport, vaccines and newly hired nanny to Harry’s plans to honor the important humanitarian work his mother, Princess Diana, did there just a few months before her death in 1997.
“Africa is an extremely important continent for Harry and Meghan,” a source tells Us. “It’s not only where Harry was able to spend time away from the public eye growing up — and where Diana made a difference— but it’s also where their love grew. Going back there will be so special for them now that they’re a family.”
As plans firm up, the couple are taking things “very seriously,” adds an insider, “to make sure that Archie remains safe and happy throughout.”
