When she joined the royal family, Meghan Markle was hailed as a “breath of fresh air”. But the relationship quickly soured, with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex fleeing to the US less than three years after their 2018 wedding.

A new documentary is shedding light on the two faces of the former actress. Royal experts claim the Suits star’s public charm hid a more sinister secret known only behind palace walls. While Meghan, 39, was wowing the public with her relaxed touch on official engagements, royal courtiers felt her warmth was all for show.

“I was hearing very bad stories from early on that Meghan was upsetting people,” royal expert Penny Junor said in the TV special, Harry and William: What Went Wrong?. “[Meghan] was not as charming as she seemed,” Junor added.

It wasn’t just palace staff who saw early red flags that she may not be suited for royal life. When Prince William first met Meghan, he thought she may have an ulterior motive for dating Harry, 36.

“Someone close to William told me William felt from an early stage that Meghan had an agenda,” biographer Robert Lacey explains in the documentary.
