JUST
A FEW DECADES BACK, TV USED TO BE CONSIDERED AS ONE OF THE BIGGEST INDULGENCES THE AVERAGE FAMILY CAN ENJOY. FROM NEWS BROADCASTS TO EDUCATIONAL AND ENTERTAINMENT SHOWS, VIEWERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD RUSHED THROUGH THEIR DAILY ROUTINE TO MAKE IT IN TIME FOR THEIR FAVORITE PROGRAMS.
Eventually, TV expanded from local and cable network broadcasting to become the main platform for video-based media, as we have witnessed through TV shows, advertisements, minisegments, audio-visual material, and music videos along the years. Video content also became more accessible through numerous formats, including Betamax, VHS, laser discs, VCDs, and DVDs.
Viewers began to enjoy the luxury of watching at their own leisure, when they were able to handpick and record their favorite shows, instead of adjusting their lives to accommodate standard TV programming schedules.
So what is it about video that has made it so popular?
For one, video presents plenty of advantages as a communication tool.
It’s easy to access, it appeals to both auditory and visual senses, and it can deliver clear concepts in a matter of seconds. Video is arguably more engaging and interesting compared with text-based media, or the more ephemeral radio content.
Video content is also flexible in that it allows creators to experiment and innovate with their approach, so they can create powerful and memorable experiences for their audiences. It also provides an option to pause at intervals to help the audience adjust their processing pace accordingly.
If a video is made and communicated well, it contributes to greater audience retention, and helps sustain the audience’s interest for longer periods. This is especially crucial when it’s used in an educational and professional environment.
Given that video offers so many audience perks, it’s no surprise that it has evolved into one of the main communication platforms once the world went online.
