Yes, it’s freezing, but getting outside in winter is vital for upping our vitamin D levels, something that is far trickier in winter when sunlight hours are shorter. Vitamin D is crucial not only for healthy teeth and bones, but for protection against cancer and heart disease, and helps the immune system to fight infections. Parkrun is a free, timed 5k run, which happens every Saturday morning in around 560 parks across the country. The event, run by local volunteers, is open to anyone over the age of five, no matter what their ability. “Parkrun isn’t a race or about losing weight, it’s about building confidence across people’s daily lives,” says Chrissie Wellington, head of participation at parkrun UK.
