Khayelitsha

A tourism hub in the Cape Flats, Khayelitsha lives up to its Xhosa name, ‘Our New Home’.

Khayelitsha

Traditionally tourism in Cape Town is focused around the pristine beaches of the Atlantic Seaboard, the buzz in the city centre, a few restaurants in the southern suburbs and the bucolic winelands. The Cape Flats is mostly ignored or presented as a novel afterthought. This is changing though, with a determined group of entrepreneurs who are putting Khayelitsha on the map for the right reasons. Here are some highlights visitors to this vibrant community can look forward to.

BUT FIRST, COFFEE

Starting the morning with a cup of java is a ritual worldwide and Khayelitsha is no exception. Sikelela Dibela capitalised on nine years working as a barista at Vida e Caffè, opening his own place in 2016, Sikis Koffee Kafe, which he runs from his converted garage in Phakamisa. The bright indoor/outdoor space offers Wi-Fi. Sikis Koffee Kafe 082 369 8229

Set next to the bustling Khayelitsha Mall, iKofu derives its name from the Xhosa word for coffee. They serve coffee, freshly squeezed juices, smoothies and muffins. In line with the need to be environmentally conscious they also offer glass straws and reusable bamboo cups. iKofu 083 898 4732
