Coming to the realization that a loved one requires residential care is both an emotional and challenging task and one that should not be taken lightly. With so many important aspects to consider, it can seem extremely overwhelming.
Considering the personality and care needs of the individual, as well as involving them in the process of choosing the right care home as much as possible, is absolutely key. For instance, for a loved one living with dementia, it will be necessary to look at care homes with the resources to meet these requirements. Pat Brown of Dementia UK’s Admiral Nurse Dementia Helpline explains that there needs to be resources and plans in place for changes in health. “Families often choose care homes because they can also offer the person with dementia access to activities and social support that they would otherwise be unable to have,” Pat says.
Location is also a vital aspect to consider initially, both in terms of the individual, but also for family and friends who will wish to visit the home. Once you have a suitable area of focus, your local authority Adult Social Care office should be able to provide a list of care homes.
