BIRDS APLENTY

We live in southern Manitoba five miles from the U.S. border. Our hilly area is called the Turtle Mountains, however, it’s really only a hilly range. We enjoy living on our acreage and feeding birds in both summer and winter.

We feed them sunflower seeds, corn cobs and suet cakes. Occasionally, we have the pleasure of deer wandering though as well and eating some of the birdseed that falls beneath the feeders.

Here is my easy suet cake feed recipe. I believe all four ingredients are important for the birds to survive our cold winter months. You don’t want the mixture to be too thick, so it will hold together when you pack into containers and freeze.

On stove top, over very low heat, melt:

1 lb lard (animal fat, not vegetable base)
