C.C. And Charlie

Once upon a time, a little boy named Cecil Carl Collins lived in a small town beside a big lake. He did not like his first name—or his middle name, either. “Cecil is a horrible old name,“ he complained to his parents, “and so is Carl. I want everybody to call me C.C., the way they used to.“

“But you’re almost nine years old,” said his mother. “Besides, Cecil is your maternal grandfather’s name.“

“And Carl is your paternal grandpa’s name,“ added his dad. “They’re good names— both of them. You should be proud of them.“

“But I want to be called C.C. I won’t answer if you don’t.“

“Your teacher won’t go along with that,“ warned his mother.

“Yes, she will. She likes me, and I’ll ask her nicely.“
