Building A Revision And-Recall Culture

The rise of cognitive-load theory and discussions about memory and forgetting have led to huge leaps with regard to how we get students revising. So we can no longer tell them “just read through your notes”. But we still need to create a culture of revision and recall. So how can schools help pupils to get better at remembering?

Start in September

Embedding revision and recall from the outset emphasizes to students the importance of revisiting learned content. Recapping on a weekly, monthly and six-monthly cycle has a massive impact on the retention of information. Interweaving and interleaving skills, knowledge and understanding can further reinforce the connections between different parts of your subject content.
