PET shops are dangerous places for the Fox-Pitts.

Animal Magic William And Alice Fox-Pitt's Reptiles

‘I have to keep William and the boys from going near one,’ says ITV racing commentator Alice Plunkett of her Olympic eventer husband and two sons. ‘They got Reggie at a pet shop off a Towcester roundabout on the way home from Burghley Horse Trials.’ She had no idea until they said ‘Don’t touch the box above the Aga’.

Python Reggie, less than a year old, will grow to about 5ft. He and chameleon Baz, found in a pet shop in Poole, are members of a veritable menagerie that includes guinea pigs, dogs, chickens and, obviously, several horses.

True blues

True blues

I HAVE been planting English bluebells. They grow in their millions in the beechwoods that surround us—but not in our own garden. They are, however, a protected species. The law is clear and uncompromising: ‘It is illegal to dig up bluebells or their bulbs from the wild, or to trade or sell wild bluebell bulbs and seeds.’ I have, therefore, had to buy them from a respectable bulb-merchant.
