Southend on Sea’s i-want-to-foster.com recruits foster carers across Essex and Suffolk to provide a very special role for some of the county’s most vulnerable young people. Essex Life finds out more
THERE are currently thousands of children who, for many different reasons, cannot live with their birth families. Many have associated emotional, behavioural and attachment difficulties.
For these children, a permanent, long-term placement coupled with therapeutic recovery is of paramount importance and this type of placement is known as therapeutic fostering.
i-want-to-foster.com recruits foster carers for a specialist agency (Mosaic Fostercare) which provides therapeutic solo placements for children who have experienced trauma. The agency, based in Southend on Sea, started in 2010 and covers Essex and Suffolk.
Director Andre Palmer lives in Colchester. He explains: ‘At i-want-to-foster.com we are different in our approach. The children flourish and make excellent progress. They grow in confidence, independence and maturity, which contributes to their improved self esteem. Because of this difference in the way we work, we are highly sought after to provide placements, but to provide these placements, we need more foster carers.’
True therapeutic fostering is nurturing and gives an attuned and reflective experience of family life for the child. By using reflection, the child is helped to understand the meaning of behaviours and make sense of past experiences.
