Hacks
Thursdays (through June 2), HBO Max
WHEREVER JEAN SMART goes in her Emmy-winning role as defiant stand-up comedy legend Deborah Vance, I will eagerly follow. In the second season of the glorious showbiz fable Hacks, that entails a rollicking cross-country tour as she hones a risky and revealing new act, having been dumped from her longtime Las Vegas residency.
Along for the very bumpy ride: millennial writer and sidekick Ava (Hannah Einbinder), who has her own soul-baring to do. Their relationship may never be the same once Deborah learns about the drunken email Ava sent following a bitter spat, exposing her boss' worst behaviors to TV producers.
In her act, Deborah jokes, "Betrayal is the worst feeling in the world. [A beat.] And I've woken up during a colonoscopy." But her skin has been thickened by experience, and as she observes to Ava, "You're good at writing for me...because you're just like me. You're as selfish and cruel as I am." Which maybe isn't fair or even accurate.
Still, this is a show about survival, and as Deborah strives to be more honest in her comedy and a humbled (thus more endearing) Ava vows to be a better person, Hacks avoids any sophomore slump by deepening the character development and the laughs.

THE CHOSEN
It's a bumpy start for Jesus (Jonathan Roumie) and His followers in the fourth season of the Bible-based historical drama. They're about to face rougher terrain-and we're not talking about sleeping arrangements on the road. Jesus' cousin, preacher John the Baptizer (David Amito), has been executed by King Herod (Paul Ben-Victor), and the group is reeling from that loss. In September 8's episode, Jesus declared apostle Simon (Shahar Isaac) is now \"Peter,\" the rock of the group. They're going to need him for what's to come.
FOUND
The chains are now off in the cat-andmouse game at the center of this perpetually taut NBC thriller. In Season 1, public relations specialist Gabi (Shanola Hampton) held her former kidnapper, Hugh Evans, aka Sir (Mark-Paul Gosselaar), captive in her basement and used him to help her team find missing people.
ELSBETH
Carrie Preston has played quirky, brilliant Elsbeth Tascioni for 14 years, through memorable appearances on The Good Wife, The Good Fight and now this warmhearted mystery. Viewers can't seem to get enough of this over-the-top Chicago defense attorney turned NYPD police consultant-and unofficial detective.
FBI
Last season ended with Special Agent Tiffany Wallace (Katherine Renee Kane) completely spent after a harrowing struggle to track down and finally kill the terrorist who murdered fellow agent and friend Hobbs (Roshawn Franklin).
