Tony Robinson on getting a unique view of Britain’s most inaccessible locations...
Hidden Britain by Drone
Sunday, c4 HD, 8pm
As the presenter of long-running archaeology show Time Team, Tony Robinson spent 20 years finding out what hidden historical gems lay underground. But in his latest TV series, Hidden Britain by Drone, the former Blackadder star, with the help of state-of-the art drone technology, captures stunning aerial footage of little-known UK sites that would normally be off-limits. They include rusting sea forts, an abandoned medieval theme park, Europe’s largest wine vault and a gigantic recycling plant for planes. We caught up with the 71-year-old history and travel enthusiast to find out more…
Was this a welcome change from going underground?
Well, it’s true that the ‘hidden Britain’ that I’ve seen prior to this has always been underground! It’s great fun for me – having been in the industry since the days of Charles Dickens – that there are new technologies that make all kinds of different demands of me as a presenter.
What excited you about this project?
If you look at the sequences in this series, so many of them take place in places that have fences all the way round and big padlocks on the door. We offer something that no one has ever been able to see in this way before. One of the things we found most interesting was being inside the big dome in Dounreay nuclear power station in Scotland.
This show is very much driven by technology, isn’t it?
