The first medals are awarded at the Tokyo Olympics this week as the biggest names in sport go for gold in a range of events – from swimming, cycling and gymnastics to new additions such as surfing and skateboarding.
We asked BBC presenter Dan Walker, plus Olympic champions and BBC experts Rebecca Adlington and Sir Chris Hoy, to pick the British stars to watch, while Eurosport presenter Reshmin Chowdhury selects the overseas athletes set to take the Games by storm…
Charlotte Dujardin
With four medals to her name, including three golds, Dujardin is one of the most successful dressage Olympians of all time. The 36-year-old will be without her horse Valegro, but will be hoping for more success on new mount Gio.
Dan Walker says: ‘Charlotte is a staggering competitor, proven at the very highest level, and the equestrian events could provide quite a bit of success for Team GB in dressage, jumping and eventing.’
When to see her: Team dressage is on Tuesday; individual dressage is on Wednesday.
Tom Daley
The diver, now 27, won bronze in London in the 10m platform, and another bronze in Rio in the 10m synchro. He’s competing in both events in Tokyo, partnered with Matty Lee in the synchro competition.
