DRAMA
A Very English Scandal
Sunday, BBC1 Hd, 9pm
Liberal Party leader Jeremy Thorpe’s fears that his secret homosexual relationship will be exposed and destroy his political career lead him to take drastic action in the second episode of BBC1’s A Very English Scandal.
Although Thorpe’s relationship with Norman Scott had ended in the 1960s, by the mid-1970s Scott is living in Thorpe’s Devon constituency and gossiping to locals.
With a desperate Thorpe (Hugh Grant) wanting his ex-lover out of the picture, some of his associates hire hitman Andrew Newton to bump off Scott, but Newton turns out to be a drunk, a fantasist and disastrously inept. Instead of killing Scott, Newton only manages to shoot Scott’s Great Dane instead.
