They say laughter is the best medicine. And, in these strange and tough times, Red Nose Day is hoping to unite the nation through humour as it puts the fun into fundraising for Comic Relief.
The live extravaganza to accompany the biennial event, airing on BBC1 this Friday evening, will again feature a magical mix of comedy sketches, musical performances and moving films to raise money for projects in the UK and overseas that tackle issues including homelessness, domestic abuse, poverty and mental health, as well as provide support to those affected by the pandemic.
Host Sir Lenny Henry, who co-founded Comic Relief in 1985, believes this year’s telethon is essential for boosting our collective morale.
‘These are unprecedented times and we need, now more than ever, to raise money but also raise a smile for people who are struggling,’ says Sir Lenny, 62. ‘The last 12 months have been difficult. But over 35 years, we’ve seen how having a laugh can make a real difference; it has the power to connect people and bring us together. We could all do with a laugh.’
Also on hosting duties during the evening are Alesha Dixon, Paddy McGuinness, David Tennant and Davina McCall, who always jumps at the chance to turn laughs into lasting change.
‘I love the way Comic Relief approaches raising funds for the projects they support. I’d do anything for them,’ says Davina, 53. ‘Hosting with Lenny is always a dream and the last time I hosted with David, I had a great evening. I had to explain to my daughter, who was in tears, how I ended up snogging Doctor Who!’
While social distancing measures mean the show will look a bit different, Sir Lenny promises there will be just as much merriment as usual.
