Sam Riley and Kate Bosworth on Starring in an Alternative History Thriller in Which Germany Has Won World War Two…
Hitler has won the war. The year is 1941 and the Nazis have been in occupation in England for 14 months since triumphing in the Battle of Britain. Churchill has been executed by firing squad, the king is being held prisoner in the Tower of London, and swastika banners hang from the Houses of Parliament… That’s the terrifying alternative world we enter in BBC1’s new five-part thriller, SS-GB, adapted from the bestselling novel by Len Deighton.
Sam Riley plays Supt Douglas Archer, a Scotland Yard cop who’s now working under the notoriously savage Nazi paramilitaries, the SS. Archer just wants to get on with his life quietly, but that all changes when he’s asked to investigate the murder of a black marketer in Mayfair.
Suddenly Archer, who’s known in the force as Archer of the Yard, finds himself embroiled in a case that takes him to the heart of the Nazi party.
‘A man has been shot dead and Archer realises there’s something odd about the body,’ says Sam, 37, whose film credits include Control, Brighton Rock and Maleficent.
‘The victim’s eyes have strange cataracts, so he feels there’s something not quite right about the whole thing. Before Archer has even filed his report, a very high-ranking SS officer, Dr Oskar Huth, gets on the first plane out of Berlin to London and he orders Britain’s top pathologist, Sir John Shields, to dissect the body.
