For two series of BBC1’s BAFTA winning Peter Kay’s Car Share, we have followed colleagues John Redmond (Peter) and Kayleigh Kitson (Sian Gibson) on their daily commute.

Paired as part of their firm’s car-share scheme, the two supermarket employees became friends, singing along to fictional radio station Forever FM and having hilarious conversations.

Was there more to their relationship, though? Kayleigh certainly thought so, and at the end of the last series she told John that she loved him. But when he failed to tell her he felt the same way, she stepped out of his red Fiat 500L, apparently forever.

Fans were devastated and more than 100,000 signed petitions demanding another ending. Peter, who along with Sian is one of the show’s writers, admits he was stunned by the reaction.
