At the bottom of a cliff, a dying man asks a puzzling question that draws a plucky pair of childhood friends into a thrilling mystery in BritBox's sumptuous new adaptation of Agatha Christie's classic novel Why Didn't They Ask Evans?

Written and directed by Hugh Laurie (who also appears in the series: see our box, below), the 1930s-set three-parter follows former naval officer Bobby Jones (We're the Millers star Will Poulter) after he witnesses a stranger's last words: 'Why didn't they ask Evans?'

As Bobby and his spirited pal Lady Frances 'Frankie' Derwent (The Ipcress File's Lucy Boynton) set off on a mission to discover the meaning behind the enigmatic query and what has led to the man's death, danger and intrigue are just around the corner.

Here, Lucy, 28, and Will, 29, give us more clues on what to expect...

How do you see your respective characters?

WILL I fell in love with Bobby. He's directionless but conscientious. He turns an amateur sleuth by way of the body that he stumbles upon accidentally and finds his true calling.

Frankie definitely brings out the best in Bobby; she draws a lot of ambition, optimism, and adventure out of him.

They belong to different social classes, of course, but this mystery brings them together.

LUCY Bobby keeps Frankie grounded, but he's also willing to go along with her.
