What the film attempts to do is show all sides of a human dilemma,” says director Richard Eyre, as he settles down with Teasers to talk about his latest work, The Children Act. Adapted by Ian McEwan from his 2014 novel, the film is an acute look at a high court judge, Justice Fiona Maye (Emma Thompson), who spends her days presiding over hugely contentious family law cases.
Dealing with a crumbling marriage (to Stanley Tucci’s philandering husband), things get even more fraught when she’s faced with the trauma of 17-year-old leukaemia sufferer Adam (Fionn Whitehead), who will die without a blood transfusion. Both he and his parents refuse treatment on the grounds that, as Jehovah’s Witnesses, it contravenes the doctrine of their faith. Can Justice Maye overrule?
