British-born designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard is everything that you secretly want him to be: dashing, dapper and down to earth all in one package.
When he takes me through his chic 1970s Italian-style office on Melrose, the walls are filled with laminated magazine covers featuring his designs for the rich and famous. The homes for Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian grace one Architectural Digest cover, an ELLE Decor spread on the next. “It never gets old being on the cover,” he says modestly as we head into his office surrounded by hundreds of coffee-table–worthy design books taking up several walls of shelf space. Six Warhol skateboards are displayed on the kitchen wall, and Cindy Crawford peers out from behind a bush of red coral in a stunningly large photograph taken by Laurie Stark, owner of Chrome Hearts, and another client. The worldly A-list designer counts Crawford as a friend and Cher as a top client, among others.
If you’ve watched Bullard on the Bravo series Million Dollar Decorator, you’ve witnessed his impeccable dressed-to-the-nines style, but today he’s casual and relaxed in green khakis and a buttery leather jacket. He seems alarmingly at ease considering he has dozens of projects in development.
Probably the most exciting for West Hollywood residences is the launch of Martyn Lawrence Bullard Atelier—a lifestyle shop under his office space that will sell all of his exclusive fabrics and furniture to the public for the first time. The new store will also showcase some rare finds in the wallpaper and fabric genres from new talent around the globe—from Palms Springs to Johannesburg. “I love that I have it here in West Hollywood. It’s the hub of everything,” he says. You can also expect to find silver, Limoges and bedding from Bullard’s 11 other collaborative lines.
