By the end of August 1996, Diana, Princess of Wales, had finalised her divorce with Prince Charles, found love with someone new and was throwing herself into international charity and humanitarian work as she looked toward a new future.
‘She wanted to break away from her old life, find new challenges and turn a page,’ says Daily Mail journalist and confidant Richard Kay.
A year later, she was killed in a car crash on 31 August 1997 in an underpass in Paris.
