After years spent in denial and isolation, the singer has opened up about her condition
Mariah Carey has revealed for the first time her battle with bipolar disorder, which has shed new light on the behaviour she’s exhibited over the years – from her diva demands and performance pitfalls to her high-profile romances. Sources tell Woman’s Day that after years of denial, the brave 48-year-old songstress is finally taking her illness seriously and has it under control with the help of medication.
First diagnosed in 2001, when she was hospitalised for a physical and mental breakdown, Mariah has revealed in an exclusive tell-all that, “until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me. It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore.
“I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me, and I got back to doing what I love – writing songs and making music.”
