IN CERTIFIED Lover Boy (CLB) the rapper once again takes fans on a journey through his life, mind and heart.
For 86 minutes the hip-hop superstar laments the pitfalls of fame and media attention, speaks about losing friends and finding peace, addresses rumours that his songs are penned by ghost-writers and gets honest about his losses in love.
Once again he delivers the unflattering emotional honesty that initially set him apart from his peers but this time around it doesn’t seem to have landed the way he’d hoped.
Drake explains that this, his sixth release, is about “toxic masculinity and acceptance of truth which is inevitably heartbreaking”.
CRITICS THROW SHADE
His attempt at admitting his contribution to toxic masculinity doesn’t come with any promises that his behaviour will change. Nor does he indicate where he’s going with this admission – and the result has been mixed album reviews from critics.
Some have dubbed it his most musically cohesive body of work since 2013’s Nothing Was the Same, but most say it feels laboured and that the 34-year-old sounds indecisive and fatigued.
