IT’S early morning and the 7de Laan set is a bit of a madhouse. Today filming will take place on a plot near Krugersdorp instead of the usual Sasani Studios in Johannesburg.
And it’s not surprising – every wedding needs the perfect venue, after all. The wedding in question is that of Fikani and Alexa – and the bridal couple are resplendent in traditional gear.
Fikani, played by Nicholas Nkuna, steps out of a rondavel wearing traditional headgear. Alexa, portrayed by Carina Nel, is a vision in gold, colourful beads and a glamorous doek atop her head.
After a gift-giving ceremony to mark Fikani’s Tsonga culture and their families coming together, the couple are officially husband and wife.
Hillside’s favourite pair went big with two ceremonies, one traditional and one in church. But as fans of the hit SABC show will tell you, there very nearly wasn’t a wedding. In the weeks before their nuptials, the two butted heads over Fikani’s lack of effort with the wedding arrangements. Then, just days before the wedding, Alexa got cold feet and suggested they might be making a mistake.
But this being a soapie, love conquers all and they managed to tie the knot.
THEIR relationship has caused a fair share of drama off-screen too. When they shared their first on-screen kiss in 2019, some viewers took to social media to express dissatisfaction about the mixed-race relationship.
But it seems attitudes have changed and they’re now one of South Africa’s favourite TV couples.
“We’re both happy our characters have a happy ending,” Carina says.
